past week

man in chair study

seance study.

Some of my recent work has been more exploration into themes that really make me tick as an artist. Its almost like a switch in your head being turned on.. the more you draw the more ideas you get. I carry a memo and have a list of themes i want to explore. I'm just scratching the surface. I'm excited to posting more work.  Also most of my current work has been with a mechanical pencil. If im honest i had never really used one before but its a great tool especially for sketch booking and smaller drawings.

3 from the past week

heres 3 more from the past week on my travels.  I have to say i enjoy the quick sketches alot more than the longer efforts especially working with pencil and line. Finding that balance of immediacy and accuracy. i remember steve huston saying it has to ring true regardless of how finished it is.

a few more sketchbook drawings.. All pencil..  learning..experimenting and enjoying drawing.

Wednesday, 26 October 2016

started to sketchbook again. Mainly on my train journey to work in the morning. I also want to draw my daughter more often. Im trying to do a drawing a day! Its not a rule but its amazing how much you can draw on a 40 mins train journey to work.

here are a few from the past week or 2.  Mediums.. ink pen or pencil.. Pencil is more similar to charcoal as you can blend it with a paper blender. I especially like using a 6b pencil.

ink pen fine medium for cross hatching

boxing study.. will be doing alot more of these

figure drawing experiment. A small drawing about 12 inches high.

I guess with this one i tried something a bit different in terms of stylisation. Experimenting with shape and having fun. I think its time i moved on to another series of drawings next. I'm thinking maybe drawings with a large number of figures exploring and pushing  further different concepts. I also need to work with clothed figures. I wish i had the time and motivation to post more but like many people work and life is always so busy. I think that's why i enjoy life drawing because its a very structured task and a really honest way to see your drawing progress.

life drawing

Here is a life drawing from this morning. 45 mins. I was listening to a podcast with jeff watts and he talked about how drawing is part what you see..part what you know and part what you wish you could see.. Im still working on the latter.

mastercopy after steve huston i did about 2 years back using compressed charcoal.

I learnt alot of information from this teacher especially his teachings on gesture and structure and how to maintain gesture when rendering drawings to a high level of finish. Strip away the fancy rendering of light and shadow and the drawing is essentialy a simple communicated construction. The trick is to be able to break the model down into these simple ideas. Ive been looking alot of 'disney' animators drawings of late and them guys knew how to simplify and communicate through gesture and structure. As easy as it looks its much more difficult to simplify as you are translating the model not copying it.

st neots life drawing

Ive have not been on a life drawing class for about 2 months due to work and family commitments. although i  usually do a few hours a week from online material just to keep up the practice. But yes doing a life class and working from photo reference is two different types of practice.

Ive been doing alot of personal study of late..looking at a broader range of styles including stylised cartoon and caricature im trying to educate myself and move away from the purely representation type of art. I work in the entertainment industry working within an art department for films and for my professional work to progress i need to experiment and find my own way.

Although Life drawing is still very important to me. So i want to make sure i get back to doing a couple of classes a month. So this is a result from the past week.. Still very much on that lovely plateau.  As always some good parts and some dodgy parts of the drawing. I have a habit of loosing concentration on some parts of the drawing. But its not a bad effort for 35 minutes.  I did take it home to soften some of my mid tones.

I think that some of the technique i use is quite interesting. Im inspired by the some of the mark making of J.C layendecker. I always loved his thick directional cross hatching. But i think the technique can hide bad drawing underneath so i need to make sure my blockings are more accurate.

As always.. Thankyou for looking.

charcoal pencil.

charcoal pencil on newsprint

This is a longer drawing with a charcoal pencil on newsprint. I think i have to remember to design my shapes and core shadows!! (the torso/hip into leg is probably the weakest area. Also Their is too much detail everwhere. My previous drawings using vine charcoal were more suggestive of detail. PhotoRef from newmasters. I love this model!

vine charcoal/charcoal pencil

About 2 and a half hours

vine charcoal and charcoal medium. A reasonable attempt. Some areas work really well others not so much. From photoref.

A fellow artist asked me for a list of my working tools. I thought id post this here.

vine charcoal figure

Finally more of a full figure in vine charcoal and charcoal pencil

Vine charcoal works best when its not over worked. Much more practice is needed. Many more to come

Saturday, 14 May 2016

vine charcoal and charcoal pencil

Head vignette using vine charcoal and charcoal pencil technique (15 mins each. Using a medium tooth paper. I don't practice this technique very often so expect to see much more of this in the future. I find it a much more difficult technique than using newsprint and a charcoal pencil but can produce beautiful painterly results in the right hands. (henry yann  and zhaoming wu are masters of this technique)

life drawing from 1st may 2016

I had my 2nd class in my hometown. It was good to get the life drawing practice in.Im going to be starting to hire a model for personal life drawing sessions so i can take my life figure drawing to the next phase of my development.

this was the 45 minute drawing. Im happy that i got the full pose in as i usually vignette areas out. Especially difficult drawing areas. Although  i could have been more accurate in the drawing block in before applying values. Move on and learn from the mistakes.

And here is a link to the class post.   LINK

Saturday, 23 January 2016

First post of 2016 on this blog. Ive been doing lots of color studies of late. I wanted to get a good grasp of color as its a skill that ive really neglected  Ive been experimenting with limited and full palletes of color in goauche. Gouache is a perfect medium for these small studies. I will post more soon. Edgar Payne is a great source of color reference with simple strong design shapes.

no more than 3 inches in size.

and i did some tweaks to the embrace. minor tweaks i wasnt happy with
